"As a cardiac patient, waking up with a racing heart and severe palpitations is a terrifying experience. My general practitioner immediately admitted me to Capital Hospital, describing it as a state-of-the-art, world-class facility for cardiac care. Unfortunately, what followed was a series of deeply disappointing and disheartening events that left me feeling neglected, unimportant, and thoroughly disillusioned. Upon arrival, the experience was chaotic from the outset. Security at the entrance was unresponsive and offered no guidance. My family and I had to find our own way to admissions, which set the tone for what was to follow. After being admitted, I was placed on a bed and hooked up to an ECG monitor—no orientation to the ward, no introductions, no communication whatsoever. I was left alone, in a vulnerable state, with no understanding of what was happening around me. Later that evening, Dr. Krausey appeared briefly, said a few words to the staff, and left without speaking to me directly. Shortly after, I was moved to another room with no explanation or consultation. It became clear that I had been displaced to accommodate another patient, who seemingly took precedence. It was a humbling and frustrating experience to feel that some cardiac patients are apparently “more important” than others. The lack of communication persisted throughout. In the new room, there was no Wi-Fi, and I began to suspect that I had been moved simply because of that. The daytime nursing staff were disengaged, lacked visible identification, and gave no indication of professional competence. Their interactions felt forced, even insincere, and carried an undercurrent of indifference. There was a noticeable absence of empathy or compassion—qualities that are essential in healthcare. In stark contrast, the night shift nurses were kind, informative, and helpful. They explained the ward structure, acknowledged the lack of connectivity, and showed genuine care—qualities I had hoped to see from all staff. On returning to the same day staff the following morning, the atmosphere reverted to coldness and detachment. The ECG monitor was attached for 24-hour monitoring, but at no point did anyone check whether it remained functional. It disconnected repeatedly, and no staff member appeared concerned or even aware. Discharge was abrupt and impersonal. I was handed medication without any explanation of what it was for, and there was no final consultation with Dr. Krausey—only an instruction to return in a month. When I arrived for my follow-up appointment, I waited 15 minutes, only to be seen by a different doctor with no prior communication. It was disheartening and felt dismissive. Capital Hospital left me feeling like a number—not a person, not a patient, but a transaction. What was promised to be cutting-edge cardiac care turned out to be an impersonal, disorganized, and unprofessional experience. For a facility that presents itself as a leader in cardiac treatment, this was deeply disappointing."
"Capital Hospital is surely one of the best in Durban, together with their state of the art facilities, superb staff and clean environment... your stay is sure to be nothing less than comfortable. Sharing and private wards are equipped adequately. Nursing staff check up on you on a regular. Senior nurses do an morning check-in to make sure you are happy with their services and so forth. Everyone is so friendly! And wonderful....this is delightful when you're just about to go under the knife! The catering facilities are also good, with options for light snacks and drinks throughout the day. The one thing that I truly appreciated on my numerous stays was the stillness at night , was able to sleep without any disturbances. Also the cleanliness was a biggy for me which they did not disappoint on. The only thing that I can fault them on is that the sharing wards have a tv to share. This makes it difficult seeing as you can't watch what you want too due to sharing, also it is not headphone enabled. Therefore you can hear the tv blurring during the day from the other rooms. Overall was a superb stay, and I undoubtedly recommend their facilities."
"**Review of Capital Hospital:** I am currently at this hospital, waiting for my surgery since early this morning. I woke up at 5:00 AM and was told to shower and i could not eat until after the procedure. It’s now hours later, and I still haven’t been taken to the theatre. I’m starving, exhausted, and frustrated by the lack of basic care and organization. To make matters worse, the facilities are inadequate. There are no drip holders, drips are installed in the curtains, and guests are not being cared for properly—they don’t even have chairs to sit on. The hospital also fails to enforce basic hygiene protocols, as visitors are not required to wear sterile gowns, hair coverings, or shoe covers before entering the wards ( Level 5), which is concerning for a healthcare facility. Additionally, when I realized I had forgotten my chronic medication and asked if the hospital could provide it for just one day, they outright refused, insisting I bring my own. This lack of flexibility and compassion is unacceptable, especially in a medical setting where patient care should be the top priority. At this point, I can’t wait for my surgery to be over so I can leave this place—*if* I even make it to the theatre. This experience has been nothing short of disappointing and stressful. Capital Hospital needs to seriously reevaluate its patient care standards and facilities. 🤦🏾"
